A rare hand painted tile with a square white central ground under a polychrome winged siren figure. She is placed below an overflowing basket of fruit and leaf tendrils, and emerges from a trumpet flower with foliate scrollwork shoots terminating in blue flower heads. The corners are embellished with floral medallions over a blue ground wash. Condition: corner nicks bottom right; one or two further tiny edge nicks; surface wear and some marking; glaze crazing; nothing further found. Circa 1880, reverse with "Villeroy & Boch Mosaikfabrik in Mettlach" impressed mark. Dimensions based on centimetres and rounded to nearest quarter inch. 20.3cm/8in square.
