c.1860 Limoges enamel on brass box

Category: OTHER, Silver, Metalware, Other

A fine enamel on brass oval box with a hinged lid. The top is masterfully hand decorated in polychrome enamels and gilt with a cherub offering a gift to a handsome woman, the two figures stand in front of a church with a tall spire. Cupid flies above on the left, two more cherubs cavort on the right, a large box can be seen bottom left, clouds at the top are highlighted with gilt rays. The body is embellished with enamel jewels, two exotic birds, and foliate scrollwork, the base is decorated with a gilt floral design. Condition: minor surface wear, nothing further found. Circa 1860, almost certainly Limoges France, inside lid marked with red numbers 'D832', probably an inventory number. Article measured in centimetres and rounded to the nearest quarter inch. Height 3cm/1.25in, width 8cm/3in, depth 6cm/2.5in.
