c.1930s French pair of bronze Art Deco baboon bookends

Category: OTHER, Silver, Metalware, Other

An excellent and amusing pair of Art Deco bronze bookends on streaked black marble bases. Formed as Hamadryas baboons, the primates hold their legs high, their hands planted firmly on the edges of the bronze base, they appear to be asleep. Condition: screw fixings strengthened and re-soldered to the bronze under-bases; light surface age and use wear, marble bases with one or two small edge nicks; nothing further found. Circa 1930s, unsigned, almost certainly French. Article measured in centimetres and rounded to the nearest quarter inch. Height 14cm/5.5in, width 11.5cm/4.5in, depth 10.5cm/4in.
