An original Barbizon school oil sketch on wood of a river bank, trees and figure by Daubigny, probably Charles Francois, unsigned (see provenance for authentication).
Reverse of the painting with red wax seal 'Galerie Sedelmeyer Paris'
[Charles Sedelmeyer (1837-1925) Austrian writer on art, art dealer and collector, active in Paris from the 1870s, with premises at 6 rue de la Rochefoucauld.]
Further red wax seal with initials 'CD'.
When slightly dampened, partially obscured old label, hand written in ink, reads in full:
'I certify herewith that the [word not legible] of a landscape is an original by the artist [letter or initial not legible] Daubigny and that I acquired it directly from the artist. I sold it in September 1895 to L. G. Bloomingdale Esq.'
[L. G. Bloomingdale (1841-1905) merchant, philanthropist and art patron, founder of the famous Bloomingdales department store in New York in 1872.]
Old typed label that partially obscures the above label states:
'Property of Samuel J. Bloomingdale, Hiram C. Bloomingdale, Irving I. Bloomingdale, Corinne B. Popper December 1915'
[Corrinne Bloomingdale Popper was married to the banker and NY stock exchange member, Arthur W. Popper]
Date of a consignment label (left edge middle) by the Bloomingdales, coincides with an American Art Association sale held on 22 November 1928 and shows the picture was purchased by a 'Mr. Metcalfe'.
The reverse has two additional partial consignment labels. Contact the seller for additional provenance information.
