A very rare step cut crystal scent bottle with a silver hinged top, glass stopper and original shagreen box. The bottle has two small storage compartments - for vanity or medicinal items - with engraved pull-off silver covers, the top is set with a facet cut crystal housing a minute black square (2mm/0.07in) topped with fine gold thread spelling initials that appear to be 'J&BC' over a pink foil ground, the initials are likely to be significantly important, intended for instance, as a sign of the owner's loyalty to a historical cause of the time. Condition: very tiny edge nick to the facet crystal, minor surface marking and wear; wear to the box lining; nothing further found; bottle hinge firm, good closure; box hinges firm, good closure. Circa 1690, English. Article measured in centimetres and rounded to the nearest quarter inch. Bottle height 9cm/3.75in, width 4.5cm/2in.
