A striking transfer printed tile featuring the figure of "Justice" in brown, framed in black and grey by ornate wriggle-work, half wheel designs, and scrollwork corners. Condition: one or two edge nicks; one or two small edge glaze losses; minor surface wear; fine glaze crazing; nothing further found. Circa 1880. Identification throws up a conundrum from the same source. In "The Decorated Tile", J&B Austwick, Pitman House Ltd, 1980, page 62, illustration 162, the authors refer to "a tile from the Classical Muses by Maw & Co.", on page 142 in the identification section, the back is listed as Sherwin & Cotton, Maw & Co. has no similar back.
